Customer Profile

Maurice Unis and Cathy Traylor
custom wood furniture craftsmanship

Maurice and Cathy have been customers of The Joinery for the past 20 years. After they decided to move from their traditional home in Portland to a mid century gem on the Sandy River they realized they needed new Joinery furniture. Because the more modern feel of their new home was different from what they were used to, Maurice and Cathy asked for some design advice from The Joinery.  After a visit to the showroom, followed by a house call, all of the new furniture was selected, along with upholstery and rugs to match the existing finishes in the family room.

When asked about their favorite pieces, they had two answers. Maurice’s favorite piece is their new custom modern coffee table with a tiled top that matches their fire place because they don’t need to worry about damaging the top and the large drawer is perfect for keeping their living room tidy. Cathy loves their old Shaker dining table, one of the few pieces they decided to move to their new house. The classic simplicity works well in a traditional home as well as a more modern one and the history of large family dinners was hard to give up.

Maurice and Cathy love working with The Joinery because they feel like they share similar values to the company. They love that their furniture is built locally by craftsman using sustainably harvested lumber.

James and Lisa Ranft
custom wood furniture craftsmanship

“It was love at first touch!” This is how Lisa and James Ranft describe their relationship with The Joinery. In fact, they wish we had a sign on our door “Warning: Do not pet furniture unless you are willing to give them a good home.” If we did, then they would have been a little more prepared on their first visit to our showroom. Lisa loves caressing her favorite piece, the Western Walnut Pirouette end table. But don’t worry, the rest of her pieces get lots of attention too.

For their first piece of Joinery furniture, James and Lisa purchased a Cherry Double standing Coat Rack.

Slipper Chair

For James's music space he purchased two Mac Stools with pie seats made with Quilted Maple and Cherry. Now he has something beautiful to sit on while playing his guitar.

For their living room Lisa fell in love with the Slipper Chair on The Joinery showroom floor that featured a beautiful Kravet fabric, built with FSC Certified Cherry. One was not enough for their space, and so they special ordered another one to make a matching pair. Her living room now has a set of beautifully handcrafted chairs, separated only by her favorite Pirouette end table.

Barbara Young & George Brown
custom wood furniture craftsmanship

In late 2008, Barbara Young and George Brown purchased a new home in Portland and began looking for suitable furniture for their new space. They wanted to spend their money on high quality handcrafted furniture made locally. Barbara and George enjoyed the creative process of working with their knowledgeable sales person, Cassandra who engaged Joinery designer Valivann, and shop foreman Gary to craft exactly what they wanted. According to Barbara and George, now that they realize the difference between mass-made furniture and what The Joinery makes, they would have a hard time furniture shopping anywhere else. As always, we are very thankful to our customers, Barbara and George, who place their confidence in us and allow us to make something extraordinary for them.

For the bedroom, they selected a classic Shaker Bed made in cherry with coordinating nightstands, their dining room (pictured left) is furnished with Western Walnut Live Edge dining table, set of V-back chairs and Bishop Sideboard and for their office they selected a custom bow top partner desk in Bubinga.

To create a welcoming and beautiful entry, they worked with Joinery designer Valivann to create their ideal entry table in Western Walnut with a natural edge. After seeing amazing bookmatched boards both George and Barbara were inspired by our Butterfly Bench to create the custom entry with the butterflies down the middle. So after a few rough drawings the design was finalized. For a last minute detail they also decided to set off the local dark wood with contrasting brass butterfly joints.

Robert Amos
custom wood furniture craftsmanship

Robert Amos was first introduced to The Joinery about three years ago.  An amateur woodworker himself, Bob recognized the extraordinary skill of our craftsmen on his first visit. He says he knew then and there that he would eventually furnish his home with Joinery furniture, which he will be proud to hand down to his children.

Deciding on just the right bedroom furniture took several months of deliberation, but at the question of whether to use standard half-blind dovetails or custom exposed finger joints on the drawers of dressers and nightstands, Bob didn’t hesitate.  “When it comes to joints, you have to have great skill as a craftsman,” he explained. “Why would you want to hide that joint when the drawers are closed?” We love how such a simple customization makes these Pacific-style pieces uniquely his.
