Customer / Friend Profile: Norman Gary

Pictured below is 92 year old Norman Gary (left) with one of our craftsmen, Ken Vetterick (right). Norman Gary was one of the recipients to The Joinery's long standing Meals on Wheels delivery years ago and now visits us frequently to get some of our scrap wood to keep his house warm. Norman is quite the character and a good friend to The Joinery.  He was a child actor during his youth appearing in a number of movies including, the American comedy drama Captain January in 1936 featuring Shirley Temple. Norman visits The Joinery every so often to check out our different kinds of scrap wood available in our free bin, right outside the wood shop. Norman is by far one of our oldest and most entertaining of friends, and he still drives!

Furniture Classes: Bed Class

The Joinery had the pleasure of working with three individuals who took part in our Arts and Crafts Bed class this fall. These participants had the chance to choose between several different wood types and worked eight hour days to build the bed of their choice.

* Update: The Joinery no longer offers classes. Please visit the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers for great woodworking classes here.

Customer Profile: Murray

Murray and his wife love classic movies of all types so much that when their kids moved out the house, they remodeled the two extra rooms into his and hers viewing rooms of their own M & M Theater. In both of the rooms you will find mint condition movie posters covering all the walls along with other movie memorabilia. To be able to enhance their custom theatre, Murray enlisted The Joinery to build custom pieces such as his most recent piece shown below, the M & M Theatre light box.

Murray had the front plate custom made and then brought it to us to create a Maple dovetailed box to go aorund it. This light box actually sits right on top of a Joinery bookcase.

Customer Profile: Denise and Jeff

Denise and Jeff found The Joinery after recently moving to Portland from San Fransisco. They fell in love immediatly with the Live Edge Dining Table made from The Joinery's own Walnut tree. We featured it on our Facebook page and Denise put it on hold that day.

Mark and Leigh Anne came to The Joinery early in 2010 after a rigorous search for craftsmen and woodworking shops around the country. After their visit, Mark and Leigh Anne decided they wanted to work with The Joinery to create some great custom pieces using locally harvested Western Walnut.
