Simple geometrics can be a great choice for upholstery, because while they add visual texture up close, from a distance and in the expanse of a room, they tend to blend together to create a united color scheme. Our Celilo Stool recently have come onto the showroom floor, rounding out the Celilo Dining Group. The spare, modern lines lend themselves to a spot of color to break up the graphic quality of the chair. For the stools we have on the floor, we chose a small Robert Allen pattern called Motivation, in Prussian. This fabric is available in 4 colorways, and has a delicate quality to it that make it ideal for upholstered pieces that don’t need bold statements, but where a little interest is desired.

Motivation might look fantastic paired with another highly textured piece, like the Soliloquy pattern Ondule. This unusual pattern brings thoughts of water, or sand dudes, and has such sophisticated and subtle feel to it. The patterns, while contrasting, work together to bring out their individual beauty.

Here at the Joinery, we work hard to minimize the amount of waste created by each piece that we build. One of the most useful and beautiful solutions that we’ve come up with is our end grain butcher blocks. These can be made to fit on kitchen counters, islands or bathrooms. They are available in End Grain and Edge Grain and in any of our standard wood species. Prices are by the Square Foot. Please call our showroom for currently square foot price details.

The Banjo Chair has finally made it’s way all the way through the shop, and we love how it turned out. Based on an antique chair owned by a long time customer, we designed and built a custom chair for him for his hobby, playing the Banjo.

The chair has many parts and employs some fairly elaborate construction techniques, including steam bent portions that took some doing to get right. Here you can see the steaming process, and an attempt gone bad:

Mikutowski Woodworks are one of our favorite items we carry besides our own work, and like our own products the Mikutowski name is synonymous with excellent craftsmanship, function and design. They are handcrafted in Minnesota and come from a heritage of minimizing waste and raising environmental awareness.

The Celilo Set has been such a great addition over the last year, and we are excited to be debuting the newest piece, the Celilo Stools! We built one in Cherry and 3 in Eastern Walnut, come and check out their sleek, modern lines in person. As with all our seating, the Celilo Stools can be built with upholstered or wood seats.

Here you can see them as they came through assembly, and the finished product!

As the deep darkness of winter is descending, we start longing for rooms that match our moods. There are so many ways to set the mood in a room, and one of our favorites is through upholstery. One of our newest chairs to hit the showroom floor are the Alexandra Chairs, an archived style that we have updated and set back into our standard line. The chairs we have on the floor are built in Eastern Walnut and have upholstered seats, for which we chose a plush chenille damask pattern. You can see our post about the process of building the chairs here.

This fabric is Robert Allen pattern Daedal in Prussian, and is available in two alternate colorways. A good match for this fabric might be a textured linen, like this one from Threads by Lee Jofa. It is a linen and viscose blend Made in Italy and is shown in color number 290. The natural texture of the linen is an unexpected choice next to the sophisticated damask pattern, yet brings out the natural element in the background and lets the chenille shine.
